vulpine137: Home, ferret time is calling
Home, hotdogs already scarffed for dinner. Now I think I'm going to fire
up some X Files episodes and play with ferrets for a few hours. They need
lots of playtime, and I could sure use the mood life they give. So, if I
don't log back in, I'll babble at you lot later.

scotusblog: Georgia inmate spared
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/scotusblog/pFXs/~3/296111848/ http://www.scotusblog.com/wp/georgia-inmate-spared/ A state pardon board in Georgia on Thursday nullified the death sentence of Samuel David Crowe, substituting a sentence of life without parole. Crowe, sentenced to die for a 1988 murder and armed robbery of a lumber store clerk, had been scheduled to die by lethal injection at 6 p.m. Thursday. He had filed a new appeal to the Supreme Court (07-11039) and an application to postpone his execution (07A924), but the Court had not acted on either before the death sentence was commuted. His petition raised issues about the timing of his challenge to Georgia’s lethal drugs protocol for executions. The Eleventh Circuit Court ruled that his challenge was barred by a statute of limitations.
The order of the state Board of Pardons and Paroles can be found here. The Board gave no reason for its action, simply noting that it had been asked for clemency and citing provisions of the state constitution spelling out its authority to do so.

Advisory Board ElectionsToday, May 22nd, marks the beginning of the Advisory Board Election process. Polls will be open through the 29th. Out of the following list, find the candidate you think is best-suited to provide the kind of input we at LiveJournal can use to better the site: vichantwirlandswirltangosqueaky19sollitairermrandompostingqfemaleprimitivepeoplemrflagglostcosmonautlordandreilizydlegomymalfoyjmaynardjj_maccrimmonjettejamethimcfuzzface00deathboydaniidebrabantcamblerThis is for you guys, so cast your vote! If you're looking to celebrate a special friendship, the spirit of theatre or a loved one's graduation, we've got perfect ornaments for the occasion. Take a gander at these fine options and get your celebration on. L to R: daisy, theatre masks, tiara, diploma, graduation capTxtLJYou can use LiveJournal's TxtLJ service to receive text notifications and make posts to your journal with your mobile phone. Give us some feedback on the experience at feedback. What would make TxtLJ more useful? How can we improve the service for you guys? LJ DashboardWe've cooked up a new utility at LJ Labs, where we're developing a whole host of LJ side projects. Introducing LJ Dashboard, a portal to the most popular communities, journals and entries on LiveJournal. Now there's a mechanism to help you discover new content and keep track of what's happening out there. Login to the Dashboard using your Open ID, which is exampleusername.livejournal.com. After you're asked to grant identity validation to dashboard.livejournal.com, you'll be all set to poke around and play with some of the things we've come up with. Since we're launching LJ Dashboard for the first time, we encourage you to post some feedback at lj_labs. We're currently running some house ads on the Dashboard. Soon ads for external businesses will replace them. But right now all users see them because, for the time being, we don't have a way of distinguishing between paid and unpaid users on the Dashboard. Have no fear: soon as we've got that worked out, paid users will be spared. Thanks for your patience! We're having a lot of fun with some great ideas right now so keep an eye out for new LJ Labs releases!

pezking124 posting in dentontx: I got this e-mail today:

Hello all, Twenty-five years ago we opened as a small bookshop in a cramped office space just off University. Now, due to the support and general awesomeness of the Denton Community, we’re a respectably sized bookshop in a still-somewhat-cramped, century-old Opera House. Especially given the decline of independent and used bookstores in recent years, we aren’t taking any of it for granted. To celebrate, we’re having a 25th Anniversary Sale this coming weekend, May 23-26, with 20% off books, records, VHS, and cassettes; 10% off DVDs and CDs, and 25%-50% off select collectibles (including collectible mystery titles, 45s, and more). The official Anniversary Celebration will be held from 11-5 on Saturday (the 24th), complete with door prizes, cake, readings from the winners of the Poetry Competition, and assorted other surprises throughout the day. We’d love for everyone to come out and celebrate with us. It’s smart, warm, honest, wonderful, and often quirky folks like all of you who have made this place what it’s been for a quarter of a century, and for whom we’re going to keep doing what we do. Sincerely, Aaron Recycled Books Records & CDs Open 7 Days a Week, 9-9 200 N. Locust, Denton, TX, 76201 (940) 566-5688 Thu, May. 22nd, 2008, 04:31 pm

As I told you 3 times already, and 4 times 5 minutes ago, no, you cannot have the part dispatched to you next business day. I don't care how many bazillions of dollars a second you're losing because ZOMG you can has no working AC adapter. I meerly push the buttons and flip the switches that tell the trained warehouse monkeys to package you up a new part. I don't care how many supervisors you insist on talking to, they can't help you either. Suck it up, buttercup, and next time save your work on a flash drive.

mynameisnotreal: On Computer Repair
As for that frakking HP machine with the power supply problem? The one with the proprietary power supply that can't be found anywhere, even other HP machines? The one that has been a real pain to fix? I've got four words for you: Who. Is. Your. Daddy.

I'm reading The World in a City by Joseph Berger. It's nonfiction -- basically essays about the different ethnic neighborhoods of New York City. It's pretty interesting, but I'm getting frustrated with his, well, shall we call it poetic license? For example: "succulent roasted baby lamb" As if a lamb could be a grown-up. Or: "I can . . . [get] on the subway for the price of a MetroCard." A MetroCard doesn't have a price. As a native New Yorker, I know what he means, but I think it can give other people the wrong impression. There are a lot more examples like this, and they're all small things, but they add up. Thu, May. 22nd, 2008, 12:08 pm
yanni85 posting in techsupport: You're doing back-ups.... how?

I work for an external IT company and some of our clients have their own IT guy onsite so we just handle things that are out of their realm of experience. We are also heavy into managed services. I have been helping out with monthly reviews of our managed clients and get to one of our customers with an internal IT. When I come to the bit where we review their backups I start trying to look up how these are being done. I check the usual suspects... no veritas installed, not using our "backup server" solution, no scheduled NT backups. I dig deeper, trying to figure out how they are doing backups. I find an external hard drive and look around at the files... Are you ready for this? I sure as hell wasn't. Windows briefcases. I kid you not, they're using windows briefcases on a USB drive for backups. Thu, May. 22nd, 2008, 12:43 pm
amaena posting in linux: NIS and automount question

Hey Guys :) Ok! So I have a NIS environment running with autofs. In one of my auto.foo files I have a share: blah server:/foo Now I am migrating the data from server:/foo to serverB:/foo I will change that in my auto.foo file and push the changes out with a make. Now for automount, a lot of server will have the old mount already mounted, will it automatically switch to the new mount without me manually umounting things? Or will it just try and remount the new share onto where the old share used to be (giving me an error of mount point in use) when someone uses a file in /foo (I hope that made sense) Also: If it will cause an error, is there an easier way to manually unmount all the old shares? vulpine137: Mornings, they vex me sore.
Another morning, with nothing much to say about it. In fact, due to
repetativeness, I won't even mention mood or whatnot. Just read the last
3 days to see a general gauge of my morning mood. Just ain't worth the
typing.
Approx 14.5 hours of work remaining before 3 day weekend. Those hours
include the annual Shoggoth Pit Crawfish boil, aka "Things Vulpine would
rather not eat". But, I'll make an appearance, do the socializing with
the coworkers, then bail for home. Home good, I like home.
Amusing ferret story, since people seem to like those. Got home last
night from book raid, let the mob out and got on the laptop to post
about said raid. Ferrets seem to now have an unholy fasination with the
laptop. So I typed fast, shut down the laptop and hid it so they would
stop trying to chew the cables, dance on the keys or try to nip my nose.
Demanding ferrets I have. But they're cute as hell, so I'll deal. :)
Not much else going on, so back to the pit.

trenthamfamily posting in dfwtx: Downtown Dallas Question

#1 - What is the name of the restaurant in Downtown Dallas that is in the (high up) big revolving ball? I can't think of any other way to describe it lol but at night it rotates and lights up. #2 - Has anyone ever eaten there before? If so, what kind of food do they serve? About how much would it be for dinner? Would it be inappropriate to take a 9 year old? My daughter found out last night it's a restaurant and really wants to go so we're going to take her but I'd like to see what I'm getting myself into first! Thanks. Thu, May. 22nd, 2008, 09:05 am
